To say we expect more from our computers today than a decade ago is an understatement, huh? We’ve become so dependent. And a good registry cleaner is a “must” to keep them going… that has certainly been my experience.

How To Find A Good Registry Cleaner

There are a lot of maintenance things you can do for our computer such as: using a good anti-virus program along with a good firewall to stop the trash from coming in but not slow down the PC; cleaning up with regular disc cleanups to eliminate data that is no long used and save storage space; having periodic registry cleaning to clean up this crucial storage area; and turning off unnecessary applications that come on automatically when we start our computers.

The speed of almost any PC can be increased by cleaning out the fragments of data that is always left behind when uninstalling programs. You can’t stop this from happening to your computer. And this is where a good registry cleaner means so much.

The fact is, the more data such as drivers, applications, hardware configurations, etc. that are installed on your PC the more the registry is crammed up with junk. Hands down the highest percent of computer speed problems come out of the register.

Each one of the applications loaded onto your computer will leave behind bits of data that over time can become a problem. These include invalid registry entries, bad files, bad extensions, errors, etc. They all make a mess that will slow a computer down. Just having to work around it takes the processor extra time and as the mess increases your PC speed will get slower, maybe freeze or even crash.

The registry is the area where all of the records, data and configurations are stored that are needed to run each application. Everything from appearance to browser defaults as well as what will open at start up and what will get automatic updates are placed in this database for quick access.

Unfortunately, some of these have been known to load spam or spy-ware onto computers without the owners realizing it. Stay with well known companies with certified software.

Slow Computer Startup

Do you have programs that startup automatically when your computer boots up that don’t need to be running? This will cause slow computer startup. A PC may have from 20 to 40 applications that will crank up along with the rest of the hardware when you push the start button. But it is a problem when that number is even higher or some of them are not needed.

When a computer is new it already has a lot of programs installed. Some of these need to be running at all times to operate the different necessary functions such as wireless mouse or keyboard, virus protection, firewall, etc. along with the many Microsoft files that run the computer

Then as you add programs yourself to the computer some of these will begin running at startup as well. Most of the time you will not know this is the case. Software companies aren’t going to tell you “this program runs all the time whether you want it to or not”. Or that it might slow down your PC. The installation is designed by the company to direct the computer to automatically have it turned on at start-up.

Why do these software companies do this? It’s good for advertising and promoting their product. Depending on the type of software, they may have it running so you will use their program rather than a competitive one. They may also have it to override the default settings and make it your default program for this function.

A lot of time this set up is not a problem. You may want it to come on and be your default program. But it may not be easy to turn it back off later. And soon you have too many programs that begin at startup and it makes your computer slow.

A good example is a remote web connections software that I had on my laptop. It was set to turn on and place an icon in the desktop tray. All I had to do was one click and I was connected to my computer at my office. But when I quit using it, I disabled it from the desktop but later found it still running in the back ground. To stop it I had to go into my PC setting and disable it there. We will go through this in another post. (see Remove Startup Programs)

How To Remove Startup Programs

Let’s talk more about how to remove startup programs:

In the earlier post I talked about the remote web connection service I had used that would come on automatically at computer start up. This actually worked good for me and I used it for months. When I changed and wanted to turn it off I simply right clicked on the icon for it and clicked “disable”. It should be turned off… right?

Well it didn’t. What I had done was remove the icon from the desktop tray. The program still started running every time I fired up my computer and it kept running in the back ground all the time. Now the running all the time is actually not a problem because without any commands by the computer operator the startup application was dormant. It was only the startup that used any CPU capacity.

But I wanted it off so I went to Control Panel and then into Administrative Tools and then into System Configuration. You can also reach it by Start, Run and type in MSConfig.exe or type MSConfig.exe into the Search line at Start and then click on the icon for it.

Once you have the configuration box open look at Start Up and Services to see what is coming on at startup and what is running. Under Start Up you will see a list of programs that start at computer start up (I guess that should be obvious, huh?). And you can disable them here.

Under Services I found some programs running that I had not opened or turned on and that did not need to be running. They were not listed with the Start Up programs either. So I had to disable them in the Services area. As an example, one of them was an old bookkeeping software that I no longer use, so I was comfortable disabling it.

But a word of caution. Be very careful here and be sure you know what you are disabling. With the bookkeeping and remote web connection software I knew they were not need for any other application as support.

Computer Performance: Hardware Issues Slow A PC

If you have a problem with hardware it can have an effect on computer performance by slowing it down and even causing freeze-ups. Your computer’s processor has to instruct any attached hardware what to do, when to do it, etc. This includes printers, monitors, keyboards and so on.

In order for a printer to work properly there must be a driver and possibly other software installed onto the computer. If the printer’s software causes a problem it can cause a lot of problems for the whole PC.

I had a good example of this not too long ago. The computer giving trouble was attached to a combination printer, copier, scanner and fax unit. Because of this there was a “suite” of software loaded onto the computer to make all these different features functional. And here lies a problem… at least sometimes. It gets complicated.

The software began not working properly and asking for an update. The update would download but when it went to install it would kick-out and say it was unable to. There was also a Windows update that would not install properly that was apparently part of a fix for the printer from Windows.

When the problem first appeared the computer could be rebooted or the printer cut off and back on and everything would go back to work. But it became harder and harder to get it to work as it should. The scanner function had completely quit with the pc saying it could not locate the unit for a scan even though it would still print OK.

After attempting updates from the printer company’s web site for a fix and from Windows with no success we moved on to the final option. We completely un-installed (using the Windows utility in Tools) and then re-installed the printer program from the disk that came with it when it was new. But remember to remove all areas of the printer suite first.

We also installed PC Cleaner registry optimizer to help keep this from happening again. It found literally thousands of errors, junk, etc. that it cleaned up also.
